I'm really excited that our classes are on the frontier of incorporating 3D printing into stopmotion animation. With Chipolte utilizing 3D printed characters in their stopmotion commercial "Back to the Start," and the use of 3D printed facial expression in "The Boxtrolls," I feel we are right there with the professionals! Though in 7th grade our insects are basic, the theory of incorporating this technology into animation is advanced in itself. Read the following two articles on stopmotion animation and 3D printing. I find the gizmodo article on "The Boxtrolls," particularly interesting. And for my 8th graders: One of you actually approached me last week and inquired on 3D printing our characters in the animation of the book "Captain Savannah and the Saint Patrick's Day Mystery." After reading the articles, what ideas do you have moving forward with our animation? Make sure you research the printers used in the listed scenarios and their capabilities. With that being said, keep in mind we are limited to a MakerBot II that was graciously lent to us by Joe Marchese, with JoeMarcheseconstruction.com.
