As we are approaching the upcoming STEMComicCon (on March 4th it will AWAKEN), I am excited to kick off our Scifi/Fantasy unit with a look at sound design, multiple angles, special effects, and elements of the genre. In our first film we will dissect and identify elements of the science fiction genre present in "Back to the Future."
As we watch the movie you will be responsible for a critical analysis from a genre perspective, but also a cinemagraphic perspective. You will use the guided questions to deconstruct the film, and your answers will be shared in a classroom discussion following the film lab.
I want to also introduce the concept of a paradox. A paradox is :a statement or proposition that, despite sound (or apparently sound) reasoning from acceptable premises, leads to a conclusion that seems senseless, logically unacceptable, or self-contradictory.(Google, 2015). When Marty and Doc travel in time in the Delorean, there are arguments around whether it creates a paradoxical scenario. We will construct arguments on this topic using research, and scenes from the movie to defend our writing.
Enrichment: GO VIRAL! Turn your argument into a video that delineates your points, and uses supporting scenes from the film. This is not a copyright violation because it is considered a critical analysis! Exercise your right to fair use! Make a vid!
